Hsi Lai Temple
Hacienda Heights
(1988)

Ying Quartet

One of the largest Buddhist temples in the Western Hemisphere welcomes a quartet celebrated for performances that are "as close to ideal as possible.” (Los Angeles Times). At this 15-acre mountaintop monastery — whose name means "Coming to the West" — enjoy spectacular vistas of the San Gabriel Valley, and an inspired East-West program featuring works of Chinese composers (Zhou Long, Lei Liang, Chen Yi) paired with Debussy's sensual and impressionistic quartet (in g, Op. 10). “Chamber music of astonishing, refreshing exaltation and exhilaration” (Los Angeles Times).

Concerts take place in the temple's lecture hall.

Hacienda Heights East-West Festival: Make a day of it, exploring Hsi Lai Temple's mountaintop campus of shrines, pagodas, statuary and gardens. Enjoy interactive exhibits/demonstrations of traditional Chinese arts & crafts including calligraphy, zhezhi (paper folding), flower arranging, and musical instruments — experience the ancient Buddhist ceremony of Tea Chan, and hear a talk on "Buddhism & Music" presented by a member of Hsi Lai's monastic community. Arrive early for a vegetarian buffet ($8, separate purchase, 12:30-2:30), and enjoy a post-concert reception overlooking the temple's courtyard and main shrine. East-West Festival activities runs from 12:30 to 5:30 PM. Click here to view a festival packet.
