TreePeople Coldwater Canyon Park Marmol Radziner + Associates (2004)
Michael Kaufman, Benjamin Lash, Yoshika Masuda, Peter Myers & Sarah Rommel, cellos
Situated on a plateau at the crest of the Santa Monica Mountains, an award-winning Platinum LEED Certified structure of glass, concrete and reclaimed wood hosts a unique and versatile cello quintet, hailed as “brilliant” and “superb” by the Los Angeles Times. Spend the afternoon in a 45-acre haven of natural beauty atop this chaparel-covered canyon, listening to music inspired by the natural world and performed by an ensemble whose name means “cherry tree”. Their program features many of their own arrangements for cello quintet — from Renaissance madrigals by Lassus and Gesualdo, to Four Preludes by Debussy (including the pastoral The Girl with the Flaxen Hair, and Footsteps in the Snow) and Thomas Adès’ prayerful evocation of English fields, “O Albion” (from Arcadiana) — along with other works.
