Pre-Concert Talk 3:40

Doheny Mansion
Los Angeles
Hunt & Eisen (1899)

Shanghai Quartet with
Cindy Wu, viola

“One of the finest sometimes-public chambers in town” (Los Angeles Times), welcomes “a foursome of uncommon refinement and musical distinction” (The Strad). They’ll bring “dazzling virtuosity and versatility” (Boston Musical Intelligencer) to quartets of Mendelssohn (in f, Op. 80) and Barber (in b, Op. 11 with its deeply moving Adagio) — further enhanced when violist Cindy Wu lends her trademark effervescence to one of Brahms’ finest scores (Quintet in F, Op. 88). “Utterly sublime…” — “If there is a string quartet currently in circulation that produces a more beautiful sound than the Shanghai Quartet, the name doesn’t immediately come to mind” (New York Times).

Following the afternoon concert and reception, enjoy dinner with the artists at a neighboring mansion (separate purchase). Please note the 4:00 PM concert start time.

Barbara Jury and J.H.B Kean and Toby E. Mayman are cosponsors of the Doheny Soirée Series.
