Beginning with the warm, enveloping sonority of Schumann’s ardently romantic Fantasiestücke for French horn and piano (Op. 93), this program moves to Mozart’s exquisite “Kegelstatt” Trio for clarinet, viola, and piano (in E-flat, K. 498), written to repay a gambling debt to a clarinetist! Beethoven’s charming Septet (in E-flat, Op. 20) concludes this concert, an ingratiating yet lively work that was especially beloved by Viennese audiences during the composer’s lifetime.
